Leaks and FCC filings point to a foldable that prioritises practicality over premium specs
The release of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected on July 22, leaks and filings with the FCC indicate that Samsung will be focusing on developing a device with an emphasis on practical use versus premium specifications compared to previous models. It is also speculated that this model will have an entirely different form factor from previous versions.
A Bolder, Broader Design
The most significant feature of the Fold 8 Wide is its reimagined design. The width of the cover display is said to be approximately 5.4 inches at a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of the conventional narrow widths found on Samsung’s traditional cover displays (premier device). The foldable display is believed to have a size of approximately 7.6 inches wider than earlier Fold models, which means a higher ratio of width to height than on taller foldables, thus providing a broader viewing area for multitasking, watching videos and being productive without having the black bands that commonly exist on taller foldable devices.
Built Tougher, Yet Lighter
In addition to being wider than previous foldables, it is said the Fold 8 Wide will weigh approximately 201g, which would be less than the expected weight of the Fold 8 Ultra (215 grams). The rumored durability of the Fold 8 Wide refers specifically to an ultra-thin glass coating (60 microns) on the foldable display versus the previous-generation (Fold 8 Ultra), which had a coating of approximately 45 microns, and thus, the possibility of visible creases.
Specs and Software
The Fold 8 is expected to have a 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired charging, a 50MP primary camera; with storage options from 256GB-1TB. The device will come pre-installed with Android 17 and One UI 9. Expected colour options include: Cream, Graphite, Lavender and Pistachio.
