‘Nathu La’ is Zoho’s made-in-India service, signalling India’s growing push for tech self-reliance

Software giant expands into hardware as demand for AI infrastructure accelerates.

Zoho has now taken a step beyond software, entering the hardware space with the launch of “Nathu La” and rising as an Indian tech company. Nathu La is a server platform designed and developed in India. This move marks a significant shift for the company, which has traditionally been known for its enterprise software and cloud-based business applications.

The server platform represents Zoho’s broader effort to gain greater control over its technology stack, from software and cloud services to the infrastructure powering them.

Why the launch matters?

As AI adoption expands, businesses are investing heavily in computing resources, resulting in higher operational costs and increased demand for reliable infrastructure. Zoho’s new server platform is designed to address these challenges by improving energy efficiency and lowering the overall cost of operating data centres and AI workloads. According to the company, the platform has been developed over several years of research and engineering in India. The development is also notable because it aligns with India’s broader ambition to strengthen domestic technology capabilities. Policymakers and industry leaders have increasingly emphasised the importance of reducing reliance on imported digital infrastructure and building locally developed alternatives for critical technology systems.

The launch of Nathu La reflects a growing focus on technological sovereignty, a concept gaining traction across global markets. As countries seek greater control over data, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure, investments in locally designed hardware have become increasingly important. Built using Intel Xeon processors and developed through in-house engineering efforts, the server is designed to support artificial intelligence applications, high-performance computing, virtualisation, and large-scale storage environments. Its flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of enterprise and cloud infrastructure deployments.

A broader industry shift.

Zoho’s move into hardware highlights how the boundaries between software, cloud services, and infrastructure are becoming increasingly interconnected. As AI continues to reshape enterprise technology, companies are looking beyond applications and investing in the underlying systems that power them.

The introduction of Nathu La underscores the growing importance of domestic innovation in technology infrastructure and reflects India’s ambition to play a larger role in the global digital economy. While the long-term impact remains to be seen, the launch represents another step toward building a more self-reliant technology ecosystem.
