In a massive $10 billion autonomous vehicle bet, Uber partners with 30 AV firms

A report suggests that Uber has joined hands with over 30 autonomous vehicle firms and has invested over $2.5 billion in various top companies.

The ride-hailing giant, Uber, as per latest reports has deepened its commitment to self-driving technology through partnerships and a multi-billion dollar investment strategy. Uber is accelerating its shift towards autonomous mobility by expanding collaborations with over 30 autonomous vehicle (AV) companies across the world. The move serves as a part of the company’s broader strategy for integrating self-driving tech into its ride-hailing and delivery platforms while committing over $10 billion towards AV fleets and strategic investments.

The company has been working with several industry players across robotaxis, delivery robots and self-driving logistics, aiming to make autonomous transportation more accessible across multiple markets.

An investment plan that focuses on partnership-led growth.

Uber’s strategy represents a significant shift from its earlier approach of investing heavily in proprietary AV technology. After divesting its self-driving unit in 2020, the company has increasingly focused on partnerships with leading AV developers.

Its network now includes collaborations with companies such as Waymo, WeRide, Baidu, Rivian, Avride and other autonomous mobility firms. These partnerships span passenger transport, autonomous delivery services and commercial fleet operations across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.  The investment plan reportedly includes acquiring thousands of autonomous vehicles while also taking equity stakes in selected technology partners. This approach allows Uber to expand its autonomous offerings without directly bearing the costs of developing self-driving software from the ground up.

Growing competition in the Robotaxi market.

Companies including Waymo, Zoox and several Chinese autonomous driving firms are rapidly expanding commercial robotaxi operations, increasing pressure on traditional ride-hailing platforms to adapt.

Industry analysts view Uber’s partnership-driven model as an effort to remain relevant in an evolving transportation ecosystem, where autonomous vehicles are expected to play a larger role over the coming decade. By leveraging multiple technology providers instead of relying on a single developer, Uber aims to build a diversified autonomous mobility network capable of serving different cities and regulatory environments.

While autonomous vehicle technology is advancing rapidly, widespread commercial adoption still depends on regulatory approvals, public acceptance, infrastructure readiness and continued safety validation. Many pilot programmes remain limited to selected cities, with gradual expansion expected over the coming years.

As partnerships expand and commercial deployments increase, the company’s strategy signals a long-term commitment to integrating self-driving vehicles into everyday transportation while adapting to the changing landscape of the global mobility industry.
