The IndiGo co-founder’s latest commitment takes his total contribution to the institute’s medical sciences project to ₹400 crore and includes a matching-grant component.
IndiGo co-founder and IIT Kharagpur alumnus Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional ₹300 crore towards the development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur. The latest commitment follows his ₹100 crore contribution in 2022, taking his total contribution to the medical school project to ₹400 crore. The new funding is structured as a matching grant, under which Gangwal will match contributions from other supported by up to ₹300 crore.
The arrangement is intended to encourage wider participation from IIT Kanpur alumni, philanthropists and other donors as the institute works to develop its medical sciences programme.
Focus on medicine, engineering, and technology.
The medical school is being developed with a focus on bringing together healthcare, engineering and technology. IIT Kanpur has been working towards creating an academic and research environment where medical professionals and engineers can collaborate on healthcare-related challenges.
The institute’s plans extend beyond medical education. They include healthcare infrastructure and research facilities, with proposals for a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and a 200-bed cancer care and research centre on the campus. The broader objective is to connect medical research with technological development, including work in areas such as medical technology and healthcare innovation.
A larger role for alumni funding.
Gangwal’s latest commitment also highlights the growing role of alumni philanthropy in funding large academic and research projects in India. His initial contribution in 2022 helped IIT Kanpur move forward with plans for its medical school. The matching-grant structure attached to the latest commitment could potentially bring additional private funding into the project, depending on the response from other donors.
For IIT Kanpur, the initiative represents an expansion beyond its traditional engineering and science programmes. The proposed medical sciences school is designed to create stronger links between medical education, healthcare research, engineering and MedTech. IIT Kanpur’s medical sciences initiative comes at a time when technology is becoming increasingly important to healthcare, from medical devices and diagnostics to data-driven research and advanced treatment methods.
Gangwal’s additional funding is therefore linked not simply to the construction of a medical institution, but to the development of an interdisciplinary model combining healthcare with technological research. With the latest commitment, the project now has significantly greater philanthropic backing as the institute continues to develop its academic, research, and healthcare infrastructure.
