JSW Energy to acquire Maruti Clean Coal & Power, signalling its push to balance its renewable ambitions

With dependable thermal assets and strengthening its thermal portfolio, JSW Energy is all set to acquire the Chhattisgarh-based thermal power plant operator.

In a new move of expansion, JSW Energy has set its eyes on acquiring Chhattisgarh-based thermal power plant operator Maruti Clean Coal & Power Limited (MCCPL). This has allowed JSW Energy to showcase its continued push to balance its renewable ambitions with dependable thermal assets.

JSW Energy has moved to expand its thermal power footprint with its decision of acquisition. The deal reportedly is valued at nearly ₹1,410 crore and will give JSW full ownership of MCCPL. It will add a 300 MW coal-fired power plant in Korba to its operational portfolio.

Why this acquisition matters?

For JSW Energy, this acquisition is less about scale and more about strategic positioning. MCCPL’s plant already has an established long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), which provides predictable revenue visibility. Reports suggest that a large portion of the plant’s output is tied to Rajasthan discoms, while the remaining capacity serves merchant markets. That structure offers JSW a mix of stable contracted income and flexibility to capitalize on spot market opportunities, a valuable balance in today’s volatile energy landscape.

This isn’t an isolated move. Over the last two years, JSW Energy has been steadily increasing its thermal capacity, including its larger acquisition of the KSK Mahanadi thermal assets. Industry observers see this as part of a broader diversification strategy: scaling renewables while maintaining reliable thermal generation to manage grid stability and demand surges.

India’s energy transition still needs coal.

The acquisition also reflects a wider industry reality. Despite aggressive renewable targets, coal remains central to India’s energy security. With power demand expected to keep climbing, thermal assets continue to play a critical role in bridging supply gaps.

For JSW Energy, the MCCPL deal underscores a pragmatic approach, building for the future while securing the present.
