The latest reductions come months after 16,000 companywide layoffs in January and follow the departure of two senior leaders who oversaw Amazon’s artificial general intelligence work
Amazon recently laid off employees in its artificial general intelligence division, in another round of small cuts after a broad workforce contraction at the company in January. Amazon confirmed the move but described it as a shift in focus for the division, not an artificial intelligence retrenchment.
What Amazon Said
An Amazon spokesman described the rationale directly: the company is sharpening its focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers so it can move faster on what counts. That focus, he said, means some difficult decisions, including eliminating roles within parts of the AGI organisation. The statement made clear that large AI model development remains among the most important things Amazon is working on, even as it restructures the team doing that work.
The Leadership Shifts That Preceded the Cuts
The workforce reductions follow a period of notable leadership change at the top of Amazon’s AGI efforts. Rohit Prasad, the top executive overseeing AGI, left the company at the end of last year. David Luan, who led the AGI Lab, departed in February. In December, AGI work was consolidated under senior vice president Peter DeSantis as part of a broader organisational group that also includes silicon development and quantum computing. The restructuring brought AGI under tighter centralised oversight alongside other strategic technology bets.
Who Was Affected
Employees working under Adeeb Shanaa, vice president of AGI data services, and Vishal Sharma, vice president of AGI information, reported being affected by the cuts on online forums on Wednesday. The full scope of the reductions was not immediately clear.
The reductions are part of an industry trend, as many companies once on hiring sprees to build out AGI capabilities have begun a pullback. Now that retrenchment is giving way to more difficult choices, figuring out which bets are worth continuing and which consume resources without clear near-term impact on the products customers actually use.
