The government focuses on private participation, global talent, and practical applications as India seeks to strengthen its space startup ecosystem.
Prime Minister NarendraModi has called for a stronger and more globally competitive space startup ecosystem as India expands private participation in the sector. During a meeting with the CEOs and founders of 20 space startups in New Delhi, Modi highlighted the need to take space tech beyond launches and satellites and apply it to challenges that affect everyday life.
The meeting brought together companies working across areas including launch vehicles, satellites, propulsion, avionics, space intelligence, debris removal, and artificial intelligence-based weather and climate solutions. Participating startups included Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, GalaxEye, Bellatrix Aerospace, and Digantara, among others. The intersection comes as India’s private space industry moves into a more active phase following the sector’s opening to private players. Startup founders told the PM that the policy shift had created new opportunities and helped accelerate activity across the industry.
Focus shifts to real-world applications.
A key message from the meeting was that space technology should have applications well beyond the traditional space sector. Modi encouraged startups to explore how their technologies could contribute to agriculture, livestock management, dairy, environmental monitoring and other areas affecting citizens.
Such applications could include satellite-based data for agriculture, weather intelligence for planning and monitoring systems for environmental changes. The broader objective is to connect developments in space technology with economic and social needs on the ground.
India seeks global space talent.
Modi also emphasised India’s potential to become a destination for international talent, companies and investment in the space industry. He pointed to the country’s combination of competitive costs, skilled professionals and an increasing willingness among entrepreneurs to take risks in emerging technologies.
The Prime Minister urged space startups to maintain consistency in their efforts and build an ecosystem that can attract professionals from around the world. Skyroot Aerospace CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana highlighted the progress made by private space companies during the interaction. He said the company had established three factories and could produce one rocket a month.
Modi also called for stronger links between space companies and educational initiatives such as Atal Tinkering Labs to encourage young people to develop an interest in space science and innovation.
The meeting reflects the government’s broader push to build a commercially viable private space industry in India. The next challenge will be converting technological capabilities and startup activity into sustainable businesses and practical solutions that can serve both domestic needs and global markets.
