According to the latest reports, Alphabet has now rolled back its much-in-the-news artificial intelligence (AI) image-generation feature in Google Earth. The decision was taken after users created content that appeared to breach company policies, highlighting the growing challenge of balancing AI innovation with responsible use.
Alphabet-owned Google rolled back the newly introduced AI image generation feature in Google Earth less than 24 hours after its launch. The feature, powered by Google’s Nano Banana 2 AI model, enabled users to generate photorealistic images using Google Earth’s satellite, aerial and 3D mapping data simply by entering text prompts. While the tool was designed to encourage creative and professional applications, its ability to produce highly realistic visuals also exposed potential risks.

Soon after the feature was made available, users began sharing manipulated images depicting fictional events at real-world locations. The ability to create convincing yet fabricated scenes featuring monuments, landmarks and other recognisable places sparked concerns among researchers and industry observers about the spread of misinformation.
In response, Google said it had seen legitimate uses of the feature by geospatial professionals but had also identified examples that appeared to breach its content policies. Thus, the company has now paused the rollout while it develops stronger safeguards to prevent misuse.
