Rising demand for AI infrastructure is making some earlier environmental targets harder to achieve, the company says.
Microsoft has acknowledged that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is making it more difficult to meet some of the environmental commitments it made in previous years. In an internal communication to employees, Noelle Walsh, who leads Microsoft’s Cloud Operations and Innovation division, addressed concerns surrounding the company’s expanding data-centre network.
Employees have reportedly raised questions about the growing use of electricity and water, carbon emissions and the impact large computing facilities can have on surrounding communities. The issue reflects a wider challenge facing technology companies. The demand for computing power needed to train and operate AI systems has triggered a major expansion in data centre infrastructure, increasing pressure on energy and other resources.

Microsoft has invested heavily in expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure as demand for computing capacity continues to grow. However, the expansion has also brought greater scrutiny of the environmental costs associated with large-scale data centres.
The company previously reported a significant increase in its overall carbon emissions in 2025, driven in part by the construction of additional data-centre capacity. At the same time, communities in several parts of the United States have raised concerns about electricity consumption, water use and the broader effects of new facilities. The concerns aren’t limited to Microsoft. Data-centre projects linked to the broader AI boom have faced growing opposition from residents and policymakers, particularly where new infrastructure could place additional pressure on local power and water systems.

Walsh told employees that the company is working on reducing the environmental impact of its infrastructure through engineering improvements. According to the internal communication, Microsoft’s data-centre water-use efficiency has improved substantially compared with its earliest facilities. The company has also entered into agreements aimed at bringing up to 40 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity onto global power grids.
Microsoft said more than 90% of retired computer components and server hardware from its facilities are being recycled or reused. The situation highlights a difficult balancing act for Microsoft and other major technology companies. AI development requires increasingly powerful infrastructure, while investors, employees, regulators and local communities are demanding greater attention to environmental impact.
As AI adoption accelerates, technology companies’ ability to reconcile data-centre growth with carbon reduction, renewable energy, and water-efficiency goals is likely to remain a major industry challenge.
