Instagram tightens rules for undisclosed AI-generated photos

The platform will now relabel AI-created accounts and may reduce the reach of profiles that fail to disclose their synthetic identities.

Instagram has now introduced stricter measures for profiles built around AI-generated people, as the growing presence of synthetic influencers raises questions about transparency and authenticity on social media. Under the updated policy announced on August 31, 2026, Instagram will rename its existing “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” and take action against accounts that use AI-generated people without clearly identifying them. Profiles that fail to disclose their synthetic nature could see their reach reduced on the platform.

The revised label targets AI-generated people and is intended specifically for profiles where the person featured is generated using AI. Instagram said the change follows complaints from users who encounter accounts that appear to belong to real people, only to discover later that the individuals don’t exist. The distinction is important because the new rule doesn’t apply to every form of AI-assisted content. Users who employ AI to edit photographs, improve captions, create graphics or make other creative adjustments will not be required to use the AI-generated profile label.

Unlabelled Instagram accounts could lose visibility.

Instagram is linking disclosure to how content is distributed on the platform. Accounts featuring AI-generated people that aren’t properly labelled may have reduced reach.

By contrast, Instagram says creators will not be penalised simply for operating an AI-generated profile if they use the appropriate disclosure. The move places greater responsibility on creators to make the nature of their online personas clear, while giving Instagram another mechanism to distinguish synthetic identities from conventional human accounts.

The rise of AI influencers has raised concerns.

The policy comes as AI-generated influencers and virtual personalities become increasingly visible across social platforms. Some accounts can produce highly realistic images and posts, making it difficult for users to tell immediately whether they are interacting with a real person. Concerns have also extended beyond entertainment. Investigations have identified AI-generated doctors, wellness personalities and other synthetic figures making claims or promoting products online.

That has increased pressure on social networks to provide clearer signals about what users are actually seeing and who they are interacting with. The latest policy follows other controversies surrounding AI on Instagram. In July, Meta removed an AI feature that allowed users to modify images from public Instagram accounts after criticism over the use of people’s likenesses.

For Instagram, the immediate focus will be enforcement. Identifying undisclosed AI profiles at scale, distinguishing them from legitimate AI-assisted creators and handling incorrect flags will determine how effectively the new policy works in practice.
