As per reports, AbbVie nears $11 billion deal for Apogee Therapeutics

The potential acquisition showcases how global drugmakers are intensifying their focus on inflammatory disease treatments as demand for advanced biologics grows.

According to the latest reports, AbbVie is eyeing major expansion in immunology. The global pharmaceutical giant is reportedly nearing a $10.9 billion deal to acquire Apojee Therapeutics, according to multiple reports. If finalized, the acquisition would mark one of AbbVie’s biggest deals in recent years and further strengthen its position in the immunology segment.

The reported deal values Apogee at nearly a 60% premium over its recent market price, reflecting growing investor confidence in biotech companies with strong late-stage pipelines. Founded in 2022, Apogee has quickly positioned itself as a notable player in inflammatory and immune-related therapies.

Why Apogee matters to AbbVie?

At the center of the potential acquisition is Apogee’s lead drug candidate, zumilokibart, an experimental eczema treatment preparing to enter Phase 3 trials later this year. Analysts view the drug as a promising competitor to blockbuster therapies like Dupixent, which currently dominates the atopic dermatitis market.

For AbbVie, the move appears strategic. The company has been actively working to diversify and strengthen its pipeline as revenue from its former top-selling drug, Humira, continues to be pressured by biosimilar competition. Expanding in immunology remains a key priority, especially as newer treatments like Skyrizi and Rinvoq continue to gain traction.

A bigger trend is appearing in pharma M&A.

The reported AbbVie-Apogee deal reflects a wider trend of aggressive merger and acquisition activity across the global pharmaceutical sector. With rising research costs and intensifying competition in biologics, large drugmakers are turning to acquisitions to fast-track innovation rather than relying solely on internal development.

Industry experts see this as part of a broader shift where pharmaceutical companies are betting heavily on specialty and high-value therapies. If completed, the Apogee acquisition could reinforce AbbVie’s long-term strategy of building a stronger immunology portfolio while adapting to a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.
