Amazon Data Services expands in Mumbai with new land acquisition in Thane

A massive ₹125 crore deal highlights the growing demand for digital infrastructure in India.

In a recent development, Amazon Data Services India has expanded its presence in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with the acquisition of a 10.6-acre land parcel in Thane district. The transaction is valued at a massive ₹125 crore, reflecting the company’s continued focus on strengthening digital infrastructure capabilities in one of India’s most important and commercial hubs.

The newly acquired land is located within the Palava region near Thane and is expected to support future data centre development. The deal has come at a time when demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, and enterprise digital transformation continues to drive investment in large-scale data infrastructure across the country.

Amazon Data Services expands its presence amid rising data consumption.

As per property transaction records, the land was purchased from Lodha Developers and covers approximately 42,955 square metres. The acquisition follows an earlier purchase made by Amazon in the same region, where the company secured a significantly larger parcel of land to establish data centre facilities. Industry observers note that Mumbai remains the country’s leading data centre destination due to its robust connectivity, proximity to submarine cable landing stations, and concentration of enterprise customers. As businesses increasingly migrate operations to cloud-based environments, demand for secure and scalable data storage infrastructure has accelerated.

Mumbai emerges as a key digital infrastructure hub.

The latest acquisition highlights a broader trend of technology companies investing heavily in India’s digital ecosystem. Data centres have become critical assets supporting cloud services, e-commerce operations, financial technologies, streaming platforms, and AI-driven applications. The Mumbai region, in particular, has witnessed a surge in investments from global and domestic operators seeking to expand capacity. Industry experts believe the city will continue to attract substantial infrastructure investments as organisations generate and process larger volumes of data.

For Amazon, the acquisition strengthens its long-term infrastructure strategy in India and reinforces Mumbai’s growing importance in the global data centre landscape. While specific development timelines have not been publicly disclosed, the land purchase signals confidence in the sustained growth of India’s digital economy and the increasing demand for cloud-based services across sectors.
